Summary

Dr. Javed Iqbal is a Professor in the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering at NUST University, Islamabad, Pakistan. Dr. Iqbal's research interests include GIS and remote sensing applications in precision agriculture, crop modeling, crop yield mapping, spatial variabilities of soil properties, glacier mass balance, natural hazards (landslide, debris flow, glacier avalanche, flash flood) mapping, and hydrological modeling in the context of climate change. He obtained his MS from the University of Arkansas, USA (1994) and Ph.D. from MSU, MS, USA (2000). Dr Iqbal was a postdoctoral fellow at USDA-ARS & MSU from 2000-2005. During the postdoc fellowship, he worked on multidisciplinary projects in GIS and remote sensing applications and crop modeling (GOSSYM), mainly on cotton crops and spatial variability of soil's physical and chemical properties (precision agriculture) in the Mississippi Delta. Then, Dr. Iqbal moved to the Department of Agronomy at Purdue University, West Lafayette, and worked on various multidisciplinary projects. In 2007, he was hired as an Assistant Professor at COMSATS, teaching remote sensing and GIS courses to graduate and undergraduate students. In 2009, he moved to the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering, NUST University, as an Associate Professor & Head of the Department. He developed the BE Geoinformatics four-year degree program curriculum and the Ph.D. program in Remote Sensing and GIS. He also designed the Ph.D. entry test for admission to the Ph.D. program. He also introduced several new courses at the graduate and postgraduate levels. He supervised over 100 MS students and 4 PhD students. In 2016, he was promoted to a full Professor. Dr. Iqbal has made over 200 scholarly contributions, including nearly 50 peer-reviewed research papers (h-index = 29; i10-index = 41). He has been funded as a PI by DAAD, NSF, Erasmus, the Agha Khan Foundation, and several local funding agencies/foundations. The current research of Dr. Iqbal emphasizes using multispectral and hyperspectral data for mapping and predicting various soil properties, crop yield modeling, and climate change impact on glaciers in northern areas of Pakistan. He published over 50 publications in high-impact factor journals, including the Soil Science Society of America, Agronomy Journal, and Remote Sensing of the Environment. He serves on various academic committees, including the faculty board of studies, the Senate of multiple universities, HEC program accreditation committees, and the vice chancellor search committee.
